The Next Generation of Laser Refractive Surgery: Custom LASIK

The highly anticipated next generation of laser vision correction is here.  Custom LASIK uses wavefront technology to make an individualized treatment plan for each patient that is approximately thirty times more precise than regular LASIK.

Current laser vision correction techniques treat people based solely on their spectacle prescription (all those confusing "which is more clear 1 or 2" choices). This more than 100-year-old measurement technique relies on the subjective input of the patient rather than objective scientific data.

With Custom LASIK, a wavefront analyzer (abherometer) is used to measure the way in which the entire eye sees things.  It analyses the way light travels through the entire eye and finds even subtle distortions and imperfections.  We then use this information, your refractive error and a topographical map of literally thousand of points over the entire cornea to create a customized treatment pattern for each patient. It considers and treats thousands of points across the entire central cornea individually as opposed to using a single piece of data from only one point through the very center of the eye. That is to say, that one patient that is –200 will be treated differently than another patient that is –200.

• Not only does Custom LASIK treat your prescription, but it also treats distortions in a person's eye and therefore, has the potential to improve vision well beyond 20/20.  Wavefront technology allows us to measure and treat these distortions for the first time.  The excimer laser is approximately thirty times more precise than the smallest human measurement; wavefront technology allows the laser to be used to its full potential setting a new level of expectation for refractive surgery patients.

Bladeless LASIK

The development of the Intralase laser was a major surgical milestone in laser vision correction. Instead of using a microkeratome (razor) for the creation of a flap, we are now able to use a laser to make the flap. This gives the LASIK surgeon incredible flexibility and accuracy in the creation of the flap. It also allows a thinner LASIK flap to be made and saves you more corneal tissue.
